I myself am female. And I find both equally challenging. Men are hard because they have no bum and women are so curvy while men are boxy. Women are hard because the breasts are curvy but not completely round. And then there's the issue of size. So I find them both difficult in their own way.
And those are good not crappy! I like 'em! I want them for my house when I buy one!

I think women are harder to draw. I think it's because a man's body more closely resembles a stick figure. I've learned how to draw both though.
Here's an updated lantern:

Heres my contribution - a pillar.

I can do more functional sketches if wanted, I juts did these on the spur of the moment.
However, I do know, that i certain parts of Hammerfell bamboo grows (i only know this thanks to Orix, who posted in the Hammerfell lore thread, about the ingredients. So I decided to merge tehse, witn a classic sandstone arabian pillar, but with cave drawing style stories, carved into the stone on upper and lower sections of the pillar. The lower shows, one day how the sea was calm in Yokuda (lower pillar), then there was war, and they were wiped out by a tidal wave(upper pillar). Short lived, but it gives the pillars a bit of meaning. They act in the same way some stained glass windows in churches depict the story of Christ.
I was also toying with the thought of pillars that WERE lanterns. So perhaps something, like Macars latern ^^^ , but made thin and tall, with a candle, or torch in the center, holding up a balcony, for example.
Similar to this:

^ just an example, I found on google, strech that (to support ceilings) and add some sort of flat surface on the top (to hold a roof/ceiling) and that would be pretty cool. But i will have to draw a design. It's just a thought.
BTW Macar, I wish I had the same eye for detail you do, your lantern is fantastic. But not only accurate, very nicely shaded too.

Thanks for the kind words lb. My lanterns were very strongly influenced by the crafts on a berber trader (I posted a link in another thread.
I like your pillar, at first I thought it was a lighthouse, or a fire-holder. And your other idea is very creative, I'd like to see it.

I will try to have a floor to ceiling lantern complete by tomorrow. Just getting the dimensions and patterns is so difficut for me, I am much better at armor and landscapes, more curves, but I won't get any better unless I challenge myself.

Theres some nice stuff here. I particurly like Suzuchans style. thats a nice twist.
Here's my first entry. A small church window. Maybe usuable in small, low budget towns, where the gods are far searched and expensive stained windows are out of the question.

Well, this is a concept model. A pillar like everyone else is doing.

Nice, i really like it, and it's very simple, and with everyone's here, i think we are forgetting that, Hammerfell is quite a simple place, unless you are rich or powerful, usually both.
EDIT: Also, I know ive only been here, what, 2 days, but can I make my own concept thread, since i've contributed 10 pieces or so. And there are a few more, that won't really fit in any thread (hammerfell related though) that i would love to show. And I am really thinking about making some creatures.

Of course you can. Make sure you've made a showcase thread first though, as it's more important.lb003g0676 wrote:

Er, more specifically than Andres put it, those threads explain the showcase forum very well. If you make a showcase thread and disply your work in it, and it is deemed quality work, you will be promoted to the rank of TR Modder (Like I and many others are) which means you are officialy a part of the team here at TR. You will also gain access to the modder discussions and rescources that will aid you in your future work.

I would use the tranparencies myself.Morden wrote:Morgoth: For the lattice on the latern, should we use tranparencies instead of building all of it with geometry?

I thought of that myself, but the entire thing is only 483 polys total, so I figured why sacrifice the realism for 80 polys on the lattice? If a potato can be 318 polys in Oblivion, a large pillar could easily exceed that. I haven't even added any mapping, besides the diffuse ones.
And Morden, the inside isn't really a lantern, it's just another length of pillar. (Unless I've misunderstood you, and "latern" is a high-tech pillar term.) But that does give me an idea, a lantern of some sort inside the cage part would look great, would add a little ambience too. I had planned for this to go in the taverns or roomier houses. I could always change the rustic textures to extravagant and use it for noble manors if need be though.

Thanks Macar, and I didn't get around to doing that concept, I'll get on it. But I am still having problems with the style of lantern that could touch the ceiling, but still preserve the 'middle eastern' feel. Ill run a few sketches past you guys if I get time, or might just do the concept. Bit busy till monday.. exams.
