Elden stood sunddenly, gripping the hilt on his cold, heavy sword. The night wind from the western waters seem to push aside the warmth in his soul as he moved. The noise had come from the east towards Ald Velothi. His eyes sought, intently, for the secrets the darkness tried to hide as he strained to hear foriegn sounds above the roar of the coast. The minutes tolled away at his watch and ease began to take back its place in his mind. Content that it was of no consequence, he relaxed his grip and turned back toward this watch-tower's only seat. His armor rubbed together softly as sat he back down on the wooden supply crate, releasing the grip on his sword. The thought of loyalty burned in his mind as the winter's bitterness ate away at the will he still possessed. This post had claimed almost two years of his life and sanity was a luxury that was in short supply. The wild guar packs had plagued his peace for several days as their migration had occupied some of his sad little realm.
The morning sun pushed the night across the horizon and light warmed Elden's face as took in the sunrise like so many mornings before. His watch had ended with the night and he put his hands behind his head and streched his shoulders backwards. Tiredness came on him suddenly with the eastern breeze and he headed toward the hatch in the top of the tower. The rusty hinges groaned in protest of being disturbed. He made his way down the ladder and shut the hatch behind him. The hall torches were almost out as he passed them on his way down to kitchen.
He ate his cold saltrice porrige in silence. He finshed the last bite, stood and made his way to the water bowl on the counter. The bowl made a soft thud as he placed it, dripping wet, back in the cupboard. He lay in his cot, his mind flooding with thoughts of his vows to his Emperor and the price he had not know he would be paying.
He stood before a great mountian, the wind screamed its objection to his presence as the ash choked him at the wind's behest. "You have fled from my realm and yet you still dream of me." whispered the voice in a tone that shook the ground.
"And yet you have never told me your name demon." Elden yelled back.
"There are worse things to know than my name, but they are few and far between." the voice replied.
A great explosion rumbled the earth and a flow of lava raced toward him down the mountain side. His eyes filled with terror and he turned to run as the great mass of molten rock overtook him and engulfed his body.
He sat up quickly, drenched in sweat from his dream as he had done a thousnad nights before. He had heard a voice this time, and never before. A new and vicious angere burned in heart for the ones who had exiled him to this place as he wiped the sweat from his eyes. The Red Mountain Operation had not been his choice of assignments nor had asked to dream these nightmares each night since. He felt his control leaving him and anger for his Lord's race and what they had done to him. His service had been nothing but honorable he thought as rose and put on his uniform, his frustration with this post growing every second.
