I would like to see more quests of the abstract, information-gathering type of Trebonius' one. I'm not sure that you would be able to stretch these out into a whole guild. Try coming up with a few quests. I would much prefer to have an unjoinable guild where you get a few interesting quests(a room somewhere containing some scholars who would each give you some kind of task) than a load of filller qusts and a couple of good one in a pointless guild.
Possible quest:
-Read every single one of the "Lessons of Vivec" books. Then go back to the quest-giver and you will give some kind of summary.(this would actually be a decent Temple quest, even though it shouldn't be integral to any quest line, just being the only quest given by a certain priest)

Well, this is not that bad idea, but I think such guild would rather work in Cyrodill then in Morrowind. It could be somehow associated with Julianos cult as well.
Actually it would be great if in Cyrodill one could decide to study university with classical medieval-reneissance subjets.
But for Morrowind I think no...

THEO
Magisters, for those of you who don't know, were once considered to be scientists (and to a lesser extent, wizards). They were highly respected by the noble class or by any rich or ruling entity. These magisters could predict weather, plot navigation maps, star charts, moon phases and so on and thus were called on for answers by these people. Not every magister possessed every scientific talent of course, each magister had his or her specialty. So here is the guild I am suggesting;
A general science guild that studies astronomy, geology, chemistry, alchemy, meteorology, astrophysics, zoology and a few other branches of science. Upon entering the guild, the PC would specify what field he was specializing in eg: astronomy. The NPC's in the guild would have dialogues specific to their specialty. That is, some would have dialogue topics for astronmy and some would have dialogue topics for geology and so on (some may have more than one or two). When the PC chose his specialty of astronomy, for instance, the bulk of his missions would be assigned by the characters with the astonomy dialogue. This may, initially sound difficult to set up, but I think it is no more difficult than the dialogue used in the mages guild where you have to speak to Tribonius when you reach a certain point rather than to Ajira (and if you notice, everyone directs you to him).
Please keep in mind that this guild is far different from the mages guild and covers many things the mages guild does not. The only overlapping discipline is probably alchemy.
What is their purpose? To study the world and its puzzles.
I feel that, done properly, this guild could be a tool used to reward the player for role playing and observing the detailed elements of the game rather than killing or looting. This would appeal to players who enjoy the scenery and watching the moons pass through the sky as the year progresses and those who play, at times, just to feel that they are part of this inspring world of Morrowind.
