WSG#5 [A] Tavern in a Desert Town.

Post by Morden »

WSG#5 [A] Tavern in a Desert Town.

This title is more straight forward, and less descriptive then previous topics, but I'm hoping that it will give you more freedom of creativity.

Again we are continuing with the desert theme. So far we have covered ancient ruins, markets, desert towns, and cliffside temples. Now we turn to another staple of life in
the TES world, the Tavern. You can choose to draw the exterior or the interior, or if you're feeling inspired sketch both. We would really benefit from seeing some
interior design, so I hope some of you will explore those possibilities.

Here are some questions which may inspire you, or atleast give you something to think about:

1. Is the tavern indoors or outdoors?

2. If outdoors, how do they protect patrons from the heat and sun?

3. Where is the town (and tavern) located? Mountains, cliff, dunes, ect?

4. What type of people do they serve?

5. Are there private Taverns? ie: Crowns only. How would they differ from eachother?

6. What kinds of drinks do they serve? Are they brewed at the tavern?

7. Are there any other forms of entertainment? Dancing, gambling, fighting, ect.

6. What types of furnishings would be inside? Low cushions, chairs, stools?

Good luck, and I look forward to your ideas. :) Lore gurus please jump in at any time.

Conclusions and Reflections:

Well, I think I'll leave these to Morden again, but I would just like to say extra thanks to everyone who participated. The posting was scarce for this Wsg topic, which makes these submissions all the more important. I hope you all continue to post your art and observations in future Wsgs. - Morgoth

No there aren't. Taverns serve all patrons who come through the door, and in desert towns wouldn't be too fussy. That doesn't mean there might not be two taverns in a town - one for all people, and the other for locals and likeminded visitors.
6. What kinds of drinks do they serve? Are they brewed at the tavern?

...
They would import all brew unless they are located near flood plains or fertile regions. Cheaper and more practical that way.

Does anyone remember if they actually named drinks from Daggerfall or Redguard? I haven't really played either.

In daggerfall, the only drink available or in common dialog was mead or beer. I'm sure of course that there were more embellishing drinks than those two, but asking for food in DF was very ho-hum.

This tavern has done quite well, considering the neighborhood it's in. Although no one gives the same answer, some admit the pub used to run as a backhouse (it gives interest to visitors)

It is actually quite probable that they do make the drinks themselves from imported materials. If they would move it through the desert the alcohol would evaporate. Also, they'll need a basement to store all drinks and keep it cool. In the desert it can be very cool underground so they would use the basement as a big refrigerator, probably also for the food they might serve.
As for furnishing I think it would be very comfortable with cushions and small tables, and probably some arab style waterpipes. There would probably be belly-dancers or the like and musicians.

Wow only one pic so far! Well, I'll try to compensate:

Camasnn Hawker on the inns of Hammerfell; "Hospitality is a very important part of our culture. With such a harsh climate we need to depend on eachother sometimes. The inn is an extention of these traditions. The most improtant thing about a hammerfell inn is that your room is private. Even in the poorest tavern you have your own door that leads outside- so you can come and go as you please.

The typical room is quite small. They call it "the bare bones" model. It comes with no more than a low bed, a table, and a safe chest to stow your possesions. The rooms are not small because Redgaurds are frugal, but because we expect you to use the room for sleeping alone. When you are awake, a good redgaurd innkeeper, like a good host, wants your company at the bar.

The bar (or main hall) is the center of life in any inn. Entertainers are often present and ale is always present. You can also enjoy a hearty meal, a good smoke, and the finest conversation in Tamriel."

Looking great Lutemoth and Macar.... i thought you said you couldn't do architecture Macar? Looks like you've got a pretty good handle on it. :) Thanks for trying an interior by the way. The inside is just as important as the outside.

I can't believe I forgot that you can usually sleep at Taverns... heh. My sketch is just a small Tavern/Tea House with and open downstairs and small upper area.

Here is my original sketch that I did on paper, but i couldn't get a good scan.. probably cause i didn't feel like inking it. I've decided not to thumbnail it because its not a complete sketch.

I hope to get another sketch in.. hopefully showing some entertainment.

Here's what is served at the Mole and Djinn, a countryside inn not far from Sentinel (TES2):
Ale (1 gold)
Beer (1 gold)
Mead (2 gold)
wine (3 gold)
Bread (1 gold)
Broth (1 gold)
Cheese (2 gold)
Fowl (3 gold)
Gruel (2 gold)
Pie (2 gold)
Stew (3 gold)
Then I went visit Taneth by night (TES1), where I was attacked by ruffians on my way between the three inns I graced with my presence (The Thirsty Dagger, The King's Gibbet, and The Black Gibbet), fortunately with no ill consequences, and here are the beverage I was able to find during this most noble quest:
Grog 2 gp
Guttgeist 2 gp
Ale 1 gp
Beer 1 gp
Lager 1 gp
Bock 1 gp
Port 2 gp
Pilsner 1 gp
Cider 2 gp
Djinn'n'tonic 3 gp
Bitters 1 gp
Orcgut 3 gp
Red Wine 2 gp
Grog 2 gp
Sulphurwater 2 gp
White Wine 2 gp

Thanks. It atleast gives us an idea what was used in Arena... however "Djinn'n'tonic" is going to have to go. I'd also recommend doing away with 'Pilsner'.. while its technically a type of beer, its also a very popular brand name. eg. "Hey the tavern has Pilsner sleeves on for a toonie, lets get our dose of Vitamin P."

.... well, i donno about the quality. but i guess here's is my-never-to-be-finished WIP. not really a concept cuz there's no concept in it :D

just a note: it is loosely based on some art i saw long long long time ago but can't remember where. (just to give credit ). and sorry about the whole thing, my wacom pen tip actually fell off.. so i have to carve one (no really, i literally carved a wooden tip for my wacom pen!)

that's my excuse for the poor art.

once again, please do C&C !

thx

Strongly disagree. There's djiins as creatures in HF (I think they are called djiins not geenies). So it'll make sense. IMO.

Yeah, like no one would realise Djinn'n'Tonic <-> Gin n' Tonic if we included it. Grog also could not be added; it just means booze.

To me a grog is a drink made mostly with scalding water, rhum, honey, and lemon, that you drink really hot when you're sick and have lost your voice. Sovereign against common colds and minor influenza.

As for djinn'n'tonic, could be renammed Djinn's tonic, but yeah, the pun stays obvious.

You're saying it's like we don't have sheep and deer or any other RL stuff in TES. I don't see anything wrong with Djiin'tonic resembling Gin'tonic.

djinn and tonic makes me laugh hystericaly. However, I think since gin and tonic is a modern drink it shouldnt be ingame. Grog is diluted alcohol. I think it should be kept since it is a favorate of pirates.

Take a look at the bottom picture there, that's what I think a tavern could look like in Hammerfell, it has a very deserty feel. The buildings in the top picture also have that feel.

(note: That is a piece of Developer concept art for Morrowind, it was NOT drawn by me and is for reference only.)

i have certianlly been inspired for this but my concept is just too detailed for me to draw it's beyond my ability, so mabey someone can draw it for me *looks at Egyptian Eye*

the room is RM it has a few low tables richly decorated with intricate carvings and is claymold. their are pillows around each table instead of chairs each with its own unique design and golden dyed tassles. the bar is made from redbrick, looks like MW's bars, and has starburst pattern in the middle of each brick. the bartender is a gruff Redguard who appears to be missing his ring finger as a symbol of not being bound to marriage. he is wearing a brown apron a red shirt and pale green pants. the patrons of this tavern are RM as well being able to throw a few coins on a new game invented by Imperials called Pokea (poker)and still have some money to buy a drink and a decent meal.(Blackbait fish,a local delicacy, and bread) the room is of arabian/asian influence using moving screens for private gatherings insise a clay/brick mold tavern the lights that hang from the celling are Redware Travel Lamps with metal rings for the handles. the bar stools are Hammerfell wood and are round the base is round and dark then the wood is carved into a cylindrical coneshape to the stool seat wich is fit on by hammering seat to the base. the seat has the same diamater as the base and is just as dark.

that's a nice concept Lady Nerevar....
as far as i understand Hammerfell is kinda Eastern styled (Persian + Asian ?!?!)

your sketch looks like one of them chinese type bars.
if you have the time, it would be great to see more angles of the room or a bigger prespective.

small open bar with rentable rooms behind and ontop of building. owners quarters are below.

i would of put some tables in the front courtyard but i am tired so i didn't, but it is intended for there to be some at the front anyway so guests can relax and eat.

hope you like it.

I'd also like to thank The Bardfor posting (the other one :P)

Cool picture again Chromosome... maybe its time for a new tablet pen :P I'm not sure how to do some C&C on your sketch.. normally i'd suggest cleaning up the lines and spending more time on the airbrushing, but the messy look seems to actually work for you. ;)

Nice pic btw, but I have a question.

I thought backhouse reffered to a toilet, perhaps that is not the same everywhere though.

Sorry about that, backhouse is a bit too regional name I've grown up with. I should have mentioned it as a bordello.

Hammerfell tavern with an open balcony, all attention given to the story teller. All races, except Redguard and Imperial, on one side and Imperial (bored out of their mind) on the other.
Usually Redguard do not attend because they are offended that the tavern shares the stories with others than those of their own race.

Here is my second submission. Its the sleeping area of a tavern. Small rooms containing a bed are separated from the main room by a woodframe and paper wall. The rooms are also arranged around a small stage were dancers and musicians can perform in the evenings.
