WSG#6 [Functional] Main Structure of an Island Pirate Base

Welcome to WSG#6. You'll notice that this week's topic takes us away from the desert. We spent five weeks there and I feel its time to try something fresh, so get out your cutlass and your eyepatch its time to draw some pirates. And honestly, who doesn't like pirates?

Aside from changing scenery you'll also notice that we have a different tag in the topic. This is the first week in which we have a [Functional] topic. Essentially this means that at the end of the week want to create a nicely laid out drawing of our pirate structure, which includes 2D planar views. (Eg. Front, Side, Top, Back, ect) They'll act as a schematic for a 3D model. I would ask everyone to try and submit a sketch that includes atleast a Front and Side view of their concept.

If we do this we make a modeller's job many times easier, and increase the possibility that somebody will take up the task. For more information check the FAQ thread here:

http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=15316

In our mod the base will be located on a small chain of islands off the coast of south-western Hammerfell. You can see the three islands on this map:

http://www.kolumbus.fi/zombie/hf.jpg

While the topic says, 'main structure', feel free to submit sketches for other buildings if you feel like getting creative. Just please keep in mind this is no longer an atmospheric topic. You can submit an 3D sketch if you like, but just be sure to also include those planar views.

Some things to consider:

1. These are pirates, they're not nice folks.

2. Isla de Morte? ;)

3. What is their main structure made out of? Stalker suggested an overturned boat. Possibly an old Galleon-type ship.

4. What other structures might we need to design?

5. How does the design of their main base structure reflect elements of their mini-society?

I'm sort of confused on what to draw... A pirate ship or a pirate society?

A building. The main building of a pirate base. Their HQ, #1 hideout, stronghold, base of operations, where captain Hook would live, ect, ect. The main structure.

I think a pirate base would usually just be made out of stone and wood and that it would really be a fortress.

I imagine a roughly hewn wood exterior that is connected to the mouth of a cave this way, you have both a hidden and open structure. It would be just like pirates to openly declare themselves outwardly, while having a backup plan behind or underneath in case of emergencies. Pirates aren't stupid in my opinion. This is how I'm going to design my submission, please don't copy it. :D

In Waterworld, those forts just sitting in the sea were pretty ace, and functional too! basically a rough ring shape, with gates on one side, dock in the middle, battlements and living quarters in the ring's structure. While it would be hard for pirates to construct co-operatively, this is fantasy where rules can be easily bent... within lore of course :P.

That's a nice idea orix, sort of like an artificial docking bay. It would have to be connected to land though.

I ahve actually been into a pirate fort before when I went to the carribean. It was half interior/exterior. There wern't many walls, and the poles that held it up seemed to had been driven a mile into the ground, the fort would not shake. It was raggidy but sturdy too, so try not making it too much like an actual building.

Aye, it was a bit confusing as to how the fortress managed to just sit on water, since there's no way it could have been connected to the sea floor, and it looked like a pretty meaty structure. I'm no bouyancy scientist (obviously), but if the fort had a structure which allowed it to float like a boat it could be feasable to sit in the ocean...

I would be cool if it were in a cave, along one of the cliffs.

And the exterior of the cave had been sculpted to look like a skull. (I know a little too cliche)

For gods sake no skulls and Merry Rodgers.

Oh in case somebody is wondering the base will be located on The Chain (it those 3 islands grouped together between Stros M'kai and Cespar).

Here's what I thought of when I heard pirate stronghold. This is just a 2d view from above though. (Can anyone guess how long it took me to do this? :) )

Basically just a society of pirates living in an inlet(if that's the right word) surrounded by steep cliffs. The buildings would be made out of old wood, probably leftover from vessels, and stone. The bay would have to be well protected.

I believe the term is "jolly Rodger". I cant wait to take a crack at this- it's the scallywag in me.

As you said, who dosent like pirates. The answer is ninjas.

Okay, enough spam people. Here is my attempt, I tried a funtuional one and an atmospheric to accompany.

Camasnn Hawker on pirate strongholds: Piracy is a high profit career, but it comes with risks. Pirates attack large merchant ships where they are far out numbered. They succeed against superior numbers through the use of shock tactics and fear.

While pirates often bring in a large haul, there are a few pirate captains who's wealth grows so great that they grow to admirils with thier own fleet and then to self styled pirate kings. Setting themselves up on remote islands they provide shelter and supplies to other pirates, for a price.

Pirate towns are born of pirate minds. This fortress is a good example. The front side is beveled to create the illusion of greater hight, and the front side is created to seem like the front of a much larger structure. There are several bodies hung and trophies impaled on the baners.

The entrance is in a cove, sheilded from view. All ships must pass through one entrance and pay the toll to seek shelter within.

Part 1: Floating Dock
With Orix's idea from waterworld in mind I made this. It's next to a cliff so the fort or whatever can be built on top of it, which is ofcourse good for strategic reasons.

This is the top and some details.

This is the bottom, I only used a pencil here.

Great use of the the 2D views Macar. I especially like how the front and side views are in proportion to eachother. I hope other people will do it this way as well.

I could literally modell that structure in a matter of minutes the way it's laid out.

Part 2: Look-out
Here's a look-out located on top of a cliff. These kind of bunkers are scattered over the cliffs.

I'm no artist, so I won't sketch this out or anything. But I think the isle should be one with high and sharp rocks on at least one side, with a small river canyon leading from the pirate town to sea. The town is hidden from sight by the cliffs. But the town itself is vibrant and alive, with many of the characteristics of a normal town, except everything looks poorer and messier.

okay this is what I have so far.
still need to add arrow slits and other details.
And I know on you concept the battlements don't go around the whole top but I forgot about it.

We got quite a few unique pieces of architecture, here! I guess my own follows up on Macar's mortar and brickwork idea, seeing is how such a keep is frightening enough by itself.

The image is basicly an abandoned fortification, seeing is how a pirate's basic defence is deception. Mind you, the building is very populated, and can house a few setups behind it's fronting walls. Anyone who ventures closer, upon further inspection, would discover tattered ships, burnt and frayed on it's rocky shore. There is a self-proprietated shipyard for pirates on the other end of the island, but unuseable ships or parts are strewn about and set afire, giving the appearance of ominous doom. Look loud, and keep quiet, is the credo.

I doubt the pirates of Hammerfell would use flags, but if they did they would be gold and ornate fabric, not cheap black and red rags.

heres my sketch of the outside i'll post an interior Sketch aswell later on. the outside is designed to look like a ghost town but i was thinking wouldn't it be cool if there was a massive pirate base under it, because if i was a pirae who ileagally plundered ships and had a bounty on my head i wouldn't want my hideout to be eye catching from the outside. the statues are based on the ones at easter island.

Great work. :) I think its important that we give our pirates a distinct feal over the old "Jolly Roger" stereotypes, and I think that stone architecture goes a long way. Its also very nice how you've shown that fort Lutemoth. I like being able to see all angles of a sketch.

Just a note to anyone submitting a sketch. If you're going to submit an atmospheric picture with your functional sketch, make sure that the 2d views are just as detailed as your 3D work. Our goal this week is to really focus our end results on those 2D views so that we can create a concept that is easy to model from. The more detailed the plan, the more detailed the model. :) A few people have missed the purpose of this week's WSG, but it is the first week. :P

Okay guys, Im back. This is interesting.... Be Right Back *draws picture*

...there. This drwin portrays some abandoned ruins on an island not far off the cost. Sove caves and stuff hide more secrets. There is a large gap in the cliff, that was formed when water eroded the cliff. They reveal some ruins, which could serve as a pirate hideout. Enjoy!

WSG#6 [Functional] Main Structure of an Island Pirate Base

Our goal this week is to really focus our end results on those 2D views so that we can create a concept that is easy to model from.
If your work doesn't fall into this catagory p
lease try to draw an alternate version which falls within the topic guidelines.

Check the FAQ thread for some basic examples of what we're trying to achieve in terms of [Functional] art. ;)

here's mine... probably does not meet the quality standards (i am still trying to find my 'concept art style' <-sometimes messy is good :D heheeh)

just trying out the 'up-side-down' ship idea. its actually pretty good if it can be put into use. kinda like the bug-shell houses in ald'hun(sp) in morrowind. one of the kind sort of idea.

though this ship is a little big.
its probably hard for support and most of the things need to be moved.

here are some different views of it

-- the following are pics i found online --

Hail fellow TR members :)

NIce drawings agian, especially macar and lute have done their job very well again :) Keep up the good work.

Sadly i'm still very busy with school. I really have to put my time into it or i'll be doing this year again, so there won't be too much of drawings from my side for a while. If you really want me to draw something (which i wouldn't understand because lute and macar and everyone make awesome art) mail me at adriaan_ff@hotmail.com. If you feel like demoting me to a TR member, do so. I'll take a look in here now or then. But i'm not leaving for final, mind that :P

Greets,

Vholdrian.
