What kind of critters have you seen in the wild?

Post by Andres Indoril »

I was just intrested of what kind of critters have you seen in the wild...

For myself I was coming home from school, trough the forest, because there was no transport coming. I entered the woods, crabbed a willow club from a willow. Just in case I would have encountered a fox (they are everywhere in this time of year.)
I was stepping trough the forest and then I came to a more hilly area, climbed the first hill. Looked around and saw nothing intresting, went down from the other side of the hill, then went to another hill, climbed up and started to move forward... There it was a fox sneaking around under a tree north from the hill, so I had nothing to be afraid of... I looked in at the road I was supposed to use, and there was another fox. So I started to walk down the hill from the same side I climbed it, went from another road for a minute when I approached another hill. I climbed it and looked around. The second fox was watching at me. So I started to stare at it.
Ten seconds had passed by the time the fox started to run in the opposite direction. Someway I scared it away (or it was just the thing that foxes aren't suicidal like cliff-racers in Morrowind.) Anyway I moved on until I made my way home.

I bow and rifle hunt. I've had a 350 pound black bear (You know, the ones that can climb trees) come within 20 feet of my treestand, directly under me at least twice. I've seen numerous deer that were too far away to shoot, but I've shot three deer in my three years of hunting, two bucks and one doe. Just last year I had two Bobcats, first a male and then a female pass right in front of me. Not to mention the numerous other rodents such as foxes, squirrels, and chipmunks that you encounter out there. Once I was holding still because I had spotted a dear coming across the ridge, when a chipmunk climbed down the tree and came to a halt on my shoulder. When I moved, it flipped out and shot back up the tree and stood there chirping at me for two hours. That was awesome. I encounter beavers while flyfishing, as well as fishers and minks. Groundhogs and oppossum, plaugue our backyard, and it is commonplace to fall asleep to the sound of coyotyes howling. I love wildlife, and I know I'm lucky to live where I do. I'd scan a picture of me with my deer about two months ago, but I don't know how people would feel about it, dead animals and all...

Deer, deer, and more deer. That's pretty much all there is in southeastern Ohio. I did see a copper-head (that's a pretty poisonous snake).

When I lived in Saudi Arabia it was a little more interesting. There were camels of course, I also encountered monitor lizards, some unidentified snakes, and the most poisonous scorpion in the world.

They also have great boobs! No, I dont hunt. But everyone else does. The first day of hunting season is like a national holiday, they still have school but you dont have to go.

Heh, we actually do get off from school in our county! Pennsylvania isn't all that far from Ohio either. I'm going on a hunting trip to Kansas next year, should be a blast.

Hmmm, not much hunting culture from where I live, although I'm sure the local farmers shoot the odd rabbit or fox that eat their produce/livestock.

I do live a house next to a field, so we get many types of birds (tits, sparrows crows, magpies, sometimes bird of prey like cranes and owls), a few foxes, too many squirrels to number. Our two cats like to think they can catch things, but so far they've only had about 3 birds, one of which lived.

Since we live in hillside regions we have loads of farm animals such as sheep, cows, goats etc, although some field nearby had llama/alpaca a one stage!

Saw a young black bear run in front of our car at Yosemity Valley, it was lucky not to ahve been runover. Oh and in San Fran I saw hundred of Sealions, and went on a boat to see whales, one of which swam and rose up right by the boat. Seen plenty of dolpins too on boat trips. I've ridden on an elephant in Thailand too, that was something special.

I've seen deer up close at national parks, and have pissed of my fair share of geese. Suffice to say I dont really go into the wild all that often, although I see the attaction.

I've met a deer only once, I was taking my dog on a walk (I had a friend with me), when suddenly my dog started to run. My friend explained me that my dog started to follow a deer, We were calling for him about half an hour, buthe appeared at my home an hour later than I did.
Ofcourse I have seen a squirell, but only people hwo have met Lady N have seen a blue one with red eyes.
And I had a funny situation with a duck (I'm talking about the first one I met). I was in the northern shore of Viimsi (it's a part of Estonia) I was passing trough some plants, I had almost no sight at all, and suddenly a duck jumped out of nowhere and I fell in water. And actually I can't remember any funny stories about critters.
This was not that funny, me and my friends saved a little birds life once... My cat had pulled it's one wing to halves, though they were still connected, took the bird to a vet and I don't know what happened after that.
I have met a lot of birds, once scared away a eagle... I should stop sneaking behind creatures....

Forgot some, Morden reminded me with that post. Elk, blue heron, bald eagle, various kinds of owls, rabbits, weasles (only twice). We hate the herons, though, they eat all the fish in our stream, and come fishing season thare aren't any left.

saying "met" is funny. It's like they introduced themselves.

Dexter, if you think theatre majors are wild critters now, you should try living with them!

I've seen a fox, of course a few squirrels, a few racoons, grass snakes, and of course I remember the copperhead macar was talking about. And another time I got out of a car and almost stepped on what I at first thought was a black hose, then saw it move and realised it was a diamond back rattler.
Now in saudi arabia, there is of course the occasional wild camel, I saw a dead scorpion (It probobly wasnt poisonous when it was alive)
Never hunted though (or shot a gun for that matter)

Hahahaha, true to that^. Nothing is in Rhode Island, except squirells, our biggest fear would probably be something that excaped the zoo...
I've pretty much seen some squirrels, except for vacations... I've swam with three feet long baracuda in St. John, swam of a sand shark I believe? And accidently hit a zebra eel in Hawaii. I think its called a zebra eel, its was more dramatic when i was 8 i guess

Not mine but a friend's picture - this is one of the lovely creatures that frequents our neighbourhood:

And I've also bumped into the deadliest spider in the world WHEN IT WALKED INTO MY FUCKING HOUSE THREE YEARS AGO

Funnelweb

No pix I killed it

And up in Byron Bay I was out walking with the family when we turned around and went right back home. Why?

See for yourself:

As for non-deadly stuff, we see these around all the time... (pics courtesy wikipedia :P )

King Parrot

Cockatoo

Galah

And I've been lucky enough to see these in my time in Australia:

Echidna

I swam with some sting rays off Grand Cayman. I stepped on one of their (non-stingy) spikes and cut the side of my foot rather badly. It was weird, because it didn't hurt at all until I got out of the water.
