I'm not too big on the military rank ensignia, to be honest. Rank is originally a Roman invention, yes, but the one in use today (modern Geneva convention militia rank) is too far from tamriel to be wearing a symbol on their shoulder or cuff.
It was invented primarily for distinguishing between identical uniforms.
The most recognized order of rank in the Empire is armour, which is a much more accepted device around Tamriel.
