WSG#15: Stirk Promotional Concepts

Post by Morgoth »

I had originally chosen a different topic for this week, which I can't wait to do, but this is also a fun and very free topic. The goal for this week is to generate promotional concept art for the Island of Stirk. Stirk, as most of you know, will be TR's first community mod on the Oblivion engine. Information on Stirk, it's inhabitants, quests, and environment can be found in the first post of Sload's "On Stirk" thread:

http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=16020&start=0

Further information can be obtained from either Dexter or Sload. When we say promotional, we mean that these concepts (The ones that are deemed appropriate) will be taken and used as a means of publicity for TR, posted on the main page, art page, and probably at a few other sites, like ESF.

Now, the main focus of the WSG, Some things to consider:

- Don't give away too much imformation about the Stirk main quest or the climax thereof in your concept. This is to be used as promotional art, and providing too much information can ruin the atmousphere of the mod for a potential player. This means no zombies walking around in your concept. :P

- Black-and-white sketches can be utilized, but colored concepts are greatly appreciated. If you don't have the means to color you concept, please contact myself. Morden and Macar may also want to give it a shot, but ask them first.

- Please don't include the TR logo or header in your concept as of yet. If your art is chosen, the TR symbols will be added at that time.

- As promotional material, these concepts should be intriguing and mysterious. We want people to be interested in TR, and in Stirk. The subject of the concept can range from the island itself, a looming mine entrance, architecture (Based on Oblivion's Anvil architecture) or anything else that is directly related to Stirk, while complying with all the above points, but a dramatic or atmouspheric concept is what we're looking for. This is the same approach Bathsoft used when releasing their Oblivion screenshots.

And basically, that's it. Please read the WSG guidelines and FAQ before you contribute, and have fun. This is my first Wsg as art mod, so if I've missed something, or you would like more information about something, please PM me.

TR Modders can find the Stirk layout in the first post of this thread:

http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?p=168035#168035

It was in the admin forum. I posted the link in the private tavern simply to be a reference for the WSG. It is not yet ready for broader public viewing.

Could someone explain what we're looking at in that pic? For exapmle, I assume that the mine is the thing on the south east side. Where is the housing for the miners?

Thanks Morden. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to post that. Macar, Dexter posted this in the Admin forum. I assume I'm allowed to post it because it is directly related to the map.
Dexter wrote:The five homes you see in the center are the manors (TR07i005-009). To the immediate east is the priory chapel. The building on the west side of the island is the lighthouse. The castle is the two large buildings to the south (TR07i001). The entrance to the castle is on the northwest side of the western building. The eastern building has no exterior entrance, and should be accessed through subterranean hallways. The mine is TR07i002, and the two shacks that house the mine workers are TR07i003. I am going to attempt to add another house by the mine.

Not much. Just some unimportant scenery. I meant a little overboard on the background trees though. A few too many...

I'm also drawing a picture of the interior of the tower they find inside the mine... I looked up sevral articles of history on Aldmer... i found nothing other than they were the aylead... which i have no idea if that is correct or not.

Here's my idea (tell me if it's to much of a spoiler):

A man (Marks) is standing on a rock by the mine speaking emphaticly to a small crowd of redgaurd miners (his back is to the "camera"). They lock on looking stirred up and angry, and a one or to raise pickaxes in agreement.

What do you think?

I would say no spoilers, because it doesn't reveal the actual plot line. they could be raging about hours, wages, living conditions, benifits... but it still shows there is a feaud and you're about to be in it...

I like it alot.

Yes, and other mine characters could be in the crowd.

Here are some other ideas:

-Horacia Eulius outragedly ejaculating against thieves while some snuck by.
-Alenion Eulius reading a book while Amarion practices with a sword.
-A noble with a fancy rapier confusedly trying to wield it (misc quest).
-Cartello Stirk doing nothing while Orenius Philo caries a large number of log books and sacks and other things.
-Therander Polle counting his money.

And some spoiler ones:
-Father Ambrogio letting thieves pass through.
-The folks in Y'vassa.

Or what if we had all of these (and any other misc quests that will come up) at once?

would those misc. ideas be backgrounds to Macars greater riot scene, or seperate concepts? Because I would like to draw sevral of them, especially the confused-wielder noble.

They were ideas for seperate images, though the idea of one huge image showing the whole island would rock.

My plan is once I have photoshop, I will draw a silhouette, so you cannot tell whetehr it is a woman or man or any race (there will be a very strong light source (probably reflection from water in sunset) behind the silhouette, so their shape gets slightly distorted, in front of the silhouette of the island. Perhaps in a crows nest on a ship. Or even on the dockside of Anvil. Right now I can't tell, I need photoshop.

If you have a certain something in mind, Pound, I'm fairly good with Photoshop. If you aren't going to get it for awhile, feel free to ask.

WooTaH! I finished my picture of the rather confused noble. It's not colored (Que: Morgoth or Morden, could one of you color my promotional art, please...)

This is only the color pallete for the noble, what areas of clothing are which color. Please ignore the daedric...
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g93/Marsh_TR/colorpallete.jpg

This is the picture to be colored. This one has been fixed and removed of the daedric...

Just to make sure that they get here, I want to show only this shot, although Morden has the other 4 in .png, so they are of greater quality. This is only a .jpg for upload size. Hello, TR. I just got back about an hour ago. (Been away all weekend. It's Mother's Day here in America...) Anyway:

Nice, Silverwood. My reccomendations would be to make the face slightly less anime-ish. I'll try to color it soon.

That's one beautiful screen, Xui. Definatly has to be in. (It's now my wallpaper).

I'll try to finish mine and submit it tomorrow. Sorry for the away-ness.

Silverwood, if you do end up revisiting your drawing- here's my advice. The hands (I know, hands are the downfall of all artists). My main tip is that they are too boney to be true. Try meating them up a little (especialy the palms.

Nice work as usual, El Scum. However, I'm pretty shure that any pictures with undead in them are out- we want to keep that part a secret :). Do you want me to take a crack at coloring the first one?

Awsome Scumbag! The shading on Therander is perfect. His right arm is a bit less porprtional to his left (facing us). Great Work.

I think I'll try editing mine for once, so I can remember that. Is it jsut that the hands should be thicker near the bottom? I'm also going to try redoing his eyes, they are too anime.

I'm neither an artist nor an art critic, but am I the only one who thinks not coloring art adds something?

Therander looks great, my only comment would be that he doesn't look as old as I had pictured him, but we don't know anything about what he looks like until his NPC is done.

I'm with sload on this one, Therander drawing should be used without color, it looks fantastic in black and white, it will be a nice concept art promotion :)

Well, if I color it and it dosent look better, it's fine to use the B+W version instead. I understand where youre comming from though.

I was refering to uncolored art in general with that comment about it being better. Like Lutemoth's concepts wouldn't look as good without any color.

I agree Sload, but I think it depends on the style. Pen or charcoal like Lute's stuff is nicer looking without color, my stuff however (No.2 pencil) always looks better with color.

Scum: Undead are sort of revealing, but the one of Therander is perfect.

This topic should be about over. I'll leave it open a few more days. In the meantime, I'll try to get a new Wsg up.

I know, not a new picture, not exciting. I fixed up the hands, put some bulk and size into them. I also fixed his eyes (thank you mechanical pencil). Hope it might be good for promo.

Nice work on the hands there, you really have fixed them up nicely, problem is with pencil, is it is too thick! You can never draw things like hands at that scale with pencils, I find.

Wait for me! I still have one, I'm just having trouble with it. But hopefuly I can finish it in the next couple-a-days.

Here's a colored Therander. We could still use the B+W one instead, however. I wont be offended :)

i liked it uncolored more, this way the soft photo-shop shading clashes with the hard pen shading.

im still prety stunped about what to draw... would a pic of orenius, horacia, and marks standing next to each other with stirk in the backgroung be OK? if so, can who ever is making horacia and marks send me wip pics?

The color really takes away part of the picture, bud adds so much more life into it. The black and white works really well for that specific scene, saying the shadowing is perfect and it's inside. The color one really looks good, but just has an odd feel to the way it looks.

Thx for comment, pound. I noticed how much more dark his eyes and hands are now that they were scanned. I'm hoping this would look better colored or if it had a background.

Well, it seems like B+W is the way to go, I agree. It has a cool lithograph look. Here's a BW version with the contrast adjusted to remove some blotchyness in the shadows (at Scumbago's request)

Arrrgghhh, never mention lithographs or CMYK, or whatever, i had a crappy graphic design exam this week, and that's all i've been thinking of all week! I hate all these technical terms!!!! Anyway, my stirk art, I showed it on my concept art page, but here it is:

And I have been ding a selection of backgrounds, this one is a bit too bright and stuff, but, I am thinking, if people have people designs, You can have a background, and put whatever you want on it! Or I will do it. I will post some of my backgrounds on, anyway, heres a iew of Stirk, which is one of these backgrounds gone wrong!

Thats really good Macar, and I have the story enough now to undertstand, I think, what is going on there. It was funny, becuase i glanced quickly at that pickaxe, and though he had a crossbow, which may even be a good little joke to add. But i was quick to see that it wasn't.
