Wsg #17 The Atmospheric Art of Hammerfell

Post by Morgoth »

General Information:

After some discussion, I have decided to post this WSG, if not for productivity, then at least for a bit of fun. We are currently waiting for some things to unfold, but until then I remain your hapless Concept art moderator. Do note, however, that this is indeed an official WSG, and all of the same rules apply.

Also, I will be adding a small new feature to this WSG, which may or may not make things more enjoyable for our artists, but that is the point, it's a trial run. The feature will work something like this:

1.) You will submit your art as is customary, within a week's time. (Depending on the outcome, and my personal status, this could run longer than a week, but that is to be decided later.)

2.) Each piece of art will be added to this first post, as it is submitted.

3.) At the end of the WSG, the results will be gathered and discussed in the Admin forum and judged by the core. A poll will be taken, and a first and second places will be chosen. This week, the submissions will be judged according to the best overall art, yet other weeks they may be judged by best functional design, most useful idea, most lore-abiding submission, and soforth, so as to prevent someone from winning week after week on pure artistic talent. We want to promote well thought-out ideas, too.

When the first place and runner-up are chosen, their names will be posted on the main page alongside the WSG results news post. For those who are budding artists here at TR, what better way to make yourself known then to have your name appear in bold on the front page? Similarly, if you are a veteran artist, why not prove you're still on top by submitting a winning piece?

Before we begin, I want healthy competition here. I do not want to see the criticism of another artist's piece, unless it is strongly constructive. Also, if you are in contact with another artist, please don't pour coffee all over their submission, or any other vile means of sabotage. :)

Topic Description

The subject this week is "The Atmospheric Art of Hammerfell". Unlike a similar WSG topic that was created for the Isle of Stirk, this one for Hammerfell is wide open to unique submissions. Note also that any submissions that are deemed worthy will be collected and used as promotional art for the site and/or for the TR: Hammerfell project. This is another situation in which you may gain glory for your art at TR, as quality Hammerfell art will head our art gallery. This week we are looking for desolate landscapes, crowded markets, looming moutains, ancient ruins, sprawling cityscapes, the faraway ocean, Goldmoor in full blossom, or anything else that directly relates to atmospheric art for Hammerfell. Your piece should be moving, or in some way inspirational. Something that you yourself would love to see when entering the finished Hammerfell project.

(For those who do not know what atmospheric art is, any concept art that portrays a scene or an event unfolding is known as atmospheric concept. This is the opposite of functional art.)

Inspirational Art Links:

For inspiration, I would direct you're attention to a few of our former WSG submissions, and some other various things I've come upon.

Thanks ahead of time for your time, and have fun with this one. May the best artist win.

(Note, if you are in need of colouration for your art piece, don't hesitate to ask myself, Pound, Morden, or Macar, or any of our other colouration experts. I can't promise we'll have the time, but it's certainly worth a try.)

Use these links for reference on region information. The second one is a link to a site with tons of moor photos. If you can set your peice in a particular region of Hammerfell that would greatly add to its inspirational/promotional value.

Erm... alright, I had to do it! How often does a practically unhighlighted face glimpse the surface of a WSG? So, all apologies to Lady N, but it made me.

If any artists are taking requests, I've got something I'd like drawn up, a large atmospheric piece set in the Goldmoor region.

Errr, I ahve soemthing, but I am gonna try and get a wacomn someday this week, so we'll see what capabilities are possible with a drawing tablet. Sayonara my dear rollerball mouse! Nice one LN! Really sorry, Morden, but as I've said a few times, I have been so busy lately I hardly have time... I truly wish I could participate more. (I put up a leaving post, didn't I?) It was hard to find time to post this, let alone contribute. Thanks for reviving it. I have a WIP, which I do not doubt will remain a WIP for awhile, but better late than never I suppose. Anyway, I'd like to say that this is a WSG, and a competition. Unless everyone is working on excellent pieces to contribute, there's no excuse for this. :P This is probably one of the funnest WSG's so far! Also, it is, in fact, fairly important. Please, go ahead and try the Goldmoor concept if you are lacking in ideas. Try some pirate/ guard battles, using the equiptment from the Navy of Hammerfell WSG. How about one of our excellent creatures, roaming the Alik'r? Maybe simply a crowded city street, on a hot day. A past lore-correct battle of Hammerfell, or a scene from one of our recent HF books? This is wide-open, you can do ANY atmospheric that has the remotest relation to Hammerfell! You can't tell me no-one can think of something! Now, I'll give you ONE more week. ONE. Please make use of it. (Pretty please? With sugar and cherries on top?)

I've been avoiding saying anything so far, as I wanted mine to succeed my satisfaction fully. But, as it's getting late, I'll make deadline for tomorrow. Something that involves stonework and the dark brotherhood

Hope it's one of your black and whit masterpieces :D

EDIT:

I think I might do a black and white with mine.... although it might be nice to make it obvious that there is actually Archies camel in there being ripped to pieces, and swallowed :D. Which can only be done with a bit of red.

Edit again:

I am pulling out my piece becuase the sandrunner is too big. And i ddin't relaise theyw ere suppsoed to be rat sized.

Dnt wrry, if theres anotehr week I'll have time.

I wish I could show something. Although, I might point out that there may be a lack of entries because the topic is so broad... Personaly, I'd have trouble comming up with an idea when there are so many to pick from!

As before, I'd be happy to colorise for anyone (I'm bored).

i have a WIP as well. Its supose to be off 2 concubines in Rihad. it still needs to be colored and a background (rihad) drawn. your welcome to have a shot at it macar. your going to have to increase the canvas size for the background though (its supose to be about 3 or 4 times bigger then the girls)

I've been trying to recapture the space 1999 props a little, I was always very fond of those. I watch scifi series/movies for the special effects. They tend to be much better than the plot.

I originally had some crumbling architecture in the background, but it looked so forcefed, it would be a greater gift to leave them out.

Simply put, I didn't want to draw another generic hanwei sword. Plus, I love wonky daggers. The number of poses I scribbled and re-drew.. I can't count them all

I would prefer the DB actually owrk in groups like that in the next game. It always felt quite lonely.

Pound: Actually, I wish you'd leave it the way it is. Who cares about the size of the creature? It's a concept, no-one will even know.

Harke: That's a bit... like those hallucinagenic chillies from the Simpsons. :P A bit too vibrant and some spots, and blurry in others,

Hehehe, I am leaving it now Morgoth. I'll colour it all in. Morden you are joking right? Were you looking at Harkes?

Mine isn't coloured at all.

Here's an old peice I did, but I turned it into a portrait and colored it. This is one of the wizened devotees of satakal whose days of crawling around the desert in the nude are over.

Critisisation! *mwaha*

Macar I can't find it, but is that the one where he is sitting cross legged, seemingly meditating?

I liked that so much if it is, I did my own version somwhere in my trhead, can't be botehred to dig around for it. It looks great coloured, the tones you sue are fanatastic.
But there seems to be a slant on it, whcih I'm sure can be fixed with by skewing it or soemthing, my photoshop intelligence database, isn't very big.

LN looking good, what was wrong with it from how you pictured? I can't make many crits because i hadn't made my mind up about how I picture Elinhir yet, so I'll just say very pretty. I really like the way you have done the mountains especially.

I got my idea, so please don't close this early :(

the rise to Blue Pass (the 2 towers in the background on the mountains) is supose to be alot steeper, also the road to it is not seen most times. also less of elinhir is supose to be seen.

those are the main things.
