I actually had started on a MOD a while before; the story was that, when some unlucky pilgrim opened the Ghostgate to do a pilgrimage, sixth house followers who had been hiding nearby rushed through to try and take the gate, which is when the player comes in. I think, however, that that's the only way to escape, unless you fly over, as the cliffracers seem to be able to do that.

Or you could pass trough caves like the one from Kogoruhn to Red Mountain.

I always used a powerful jump spell if I had one.

To ensure a safe landing:
Safe Descent
School: Alteration
Levitate 1 point for 1 sec
slowfall 1 point for 60 sec (can be higher magnitude or longer duration)
Tamriel is an impossible place, built on impossible precepts. It's, frankly, a magic ball of sentient schizophrenia. --MK

Why didnt the temple seal it up?
It was the first base of operations for The Sixth House and where Dagoth Ur stayed before using the tunnel below to escape

I don't know. I think that only the Ashlanders know that it is not abandoned. The tunnel itself is probably rather new: The temple comes in, clears the place, goes happily back to Vivec, and then the tunnel gets built. And yes, tunnels also work, forgot about that.
