"I want to flip through dozens of Concept Art pages"...

Post by El Scumbago »

...said Noirgrim. And I admit it's a nice idea. So, I'll be gathering all the CA stuff that's at least noteworthy and get them in 1280x720 pages, thus gathering all of our CA resources into one handy file, then post them here. They'll be sorted either by alphabetical order (artist's name), or by type (buildings, weapons, atmospherics etc).

I am strong support of Lady N's idea as it would allow modelers to get started on things we know that we would need!

Not trying to sway your opinion, but why not 1024x768? I do agree it is a very good idea. I've thrown around some vague ideas with one or two people; it's definitely feasible.

Indeed- we never really say that a concept is official untill someone models it. Or if it is by Lute...

It would be nice if some of the concepts that were good ideas- even if not great art- where approved.

Deciding what's lore-worthy and therefore suitable for public promotion is something I have trouble with, and I don't want to be simply pulling out all of my work, constantly. This is the thing with the concept art forum and it's content: Unless it was tooth-combed, it's all conceptual. Often, it's acceptable unless either someone finds a contradiction, or it's no applicable enough.

This also makes me think of our gallery, which should be doing something to this effect..

The problem is that you can't deem something as an official concept if its not developed clearly. 'Great Art' tends to do this. Lutemoth's art happens to be of a clear and consistent style. While others have created some very nice art, there are very few pieces with a consistent theme. It's much easier to call something official if it fits with what's already established.

What should be happening, is having people draw things which are needed, as opposed to drawing something then trying to crowbar it into lore, or another part of the mod. I was really looking forward to the [FSG] getting this accomplished. However, somebody has to take all the submissions, and compose a single functional drawing along a consistent style for it to be of any use. Alternatively, the [FSG] should involve a very detailed discussion of the key stylistic features each subject should contain. Create an official concept from the start, not the other way around.

I've gathered a lot (100 concepts so far), which are still very few compared to what the CA forum houses. I still haven't run through Lute's, Pound's, and mine. Here's the criteria I use;

1) Good art. Lower than professional level, but higher than just acceptable.
2) Lore. Not strictly, but trying to stay close to the given guidelines.
3) Subject. I'm only gathering stuff that are directly related to HF, or are vague and could be related.
4) Personal stuff. If I don't like someone, he doesn't get in the list.
5) The previous was a joke. Really.

Thus, most of Lute's pieces will be naturally included, but stuff such as the gigantic Kha-gwola (spelling?) won't be, since despite it's awesomeness it has nothing to do with HF lore. Lady N's clothes on the other hand are -for the most part- suitable for anyplace, so most will be in the catalogue (or whatever we'll call it).
The reason I'm going for 1280 instead of 1024 is to be able to add more pics in every page and avoid to resize some of the big images (eventually I'll resize some huge ones though).

This will by no means be a list of "official" concepts, it's very hard to tell what's official and what's not, except of a very small number of pieces. This will be more of a quality concept artbook for inspiration, TR showcasing and modelling. Soon as I'm done I'll post it and use all opinions and counseling to make it better. We can even upload it someplace like the esf, as a proof of coolness and uberism, or whatever.

As this is still one project, are we going to include the Morrowind concepts as well? They were good for advertising and promotion, if nothing else. The old ones by Spider and Dex are definately worth noting.

Speaking of FSG- I notice that it isnt engendering the discussion it needs. I submitted a peice to the boats one many days ago. Is it good, is it bad, is there any part of it we want to use?

I'm trying my best to start that sort of discussion but it isnt happening.

If conversation dies down, take it upon yourself to compile the submitted ideas into a unified concept displaying planar views so it can be used as a schematic for modelling. If the topic dies its run its course. Between yourself, Pound, Lute, LadyN, and Morgoth, their is more then enough talent to design an official concept.

Sometimes I think I'd better step down quietly. Until then, I report with honor that this is almost done. I'll upload tomorrow or the day after and wait for opinions and suggestions.

Morgoth: I've answered every question in the first post. I'd like to make something similar for Morrowind, but there's no way I could fill more than 3 pages (and half of it would be Lady N's clothing).

Hey, the call out to meshers, topic got me thinking of this topic. As having all those concepts together we could might really have some things to sink our teeth into, as we could actually know what great art we have! Anyways just thought i would check up.

First bunch. Note that the flashiness you see is due to the fact that I desinged this as a promo work, through which we can show off and make some fuss about our coolness. Commentarize at will.

Dude... nice work! I just viewed it on win explorer slideshow, looks really great so far, also brung back a lot of memories of people that have been around these past months.

Are you going to continue work on this? Seriously, this would make for awesome PR material.

You've certainly been uber productive in the last 24 hours :P!

The chapters as I've organised them so far are:
1. Monsters & Animals
2. Plants
3. Weapons
4. Armor
5. Clothing
6. Architecture
7. Atmospherics

This isn't necessarily the order they should have, and maybe another category is in order, dunno yet. Good to hear that you like it though, and I was thinking of ways to reduce the overall size in order to upload it somewhere as promo material. Perhaps we could reduce the resolution a bit (it's 1280x720 atm) and make it into a PDF?

Yoku culture should probably be a category of it's own. It would also be nice, IMO, if the Dune Dweller things were put together, so that the reader would know that this isn't the common Hammerfell armour but that of desert-dwelling Redguards.
