Name Dedefecation

Post by Lud »

Does exactly what it says on the tin; this topic is for the discussion of and replacement of crappy names. I don't want to ever be replacing a name in a released map ever again.
First, check this out:
http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=9301
And these:
http://www.imperial-library.info/maps/conceptmapremix.jpg
http://www.imperial-library.info/maps/maps_morrowind.shtml

Ok, my first suggestions:
-Roauf Duhr is a crap name. It sounds like phlegm leaving your throat.
-Gah Ruhn is also shit. Suggest replacing it with Othrensis, from the concept map, which is fine.
-Maar Mora. 'Nuff said.
-Kogo'Tel should be Tel Silgrod.
http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=13565&
-Maar Mok

I'd like to see this dealt with efficiently. :)

Thanks for this. Very good idea.

Bodrum is just crap, and anything would be better. Perhaps just Bohd'ram or Bohdram.

Looking at the list, Ouadagahr looks pretty weird.

I also don't like Seyda Vano.

Ald Tearoth seems odd.

Shady Circle seems way too nicknamey.

Azlrag camp is crap.

Reich Parkeep is strange, but probably woudln't have made it this far without a reason.

Zanaseraborini obliges your voice get higher as you say it. Probably not a good effect. :P

Stanegau village is clearly a Germanic obscenity slipped in as an Easter Egg. :P

Map 6 is damn well overflowing with Alds. Is there some kind of TR-lore reason for this, or can we just cut some of them?

Fist of the South is very Hlaalu.

Heimlyn Keep is a bit too much like Hamlyn and Heimlich combined for my tastes.

Chinzinch pass is odd.

Anyway, that's a full list of all the names TR has to offer that sound crap right now, to my ear.

I may or may not update with suggestions. But the only one I really care about is Bodrum, because the place is too cool to have such a crap name.

Realleh? Maybe it sounds better when said with a Yankish accent, but to a Brit, or maybe just to me, Bodrum sounds awful.

Bastards. :P

Surely "Bohdram" sounds just the same to you, though? I could even perhaps be pushed to Bohdrum or Bohd'rum. Anything to give me that long 'o' sound. (Hmm, that sounds dirty. :P But what I mean is, you Yanks don't do 'short o-s' from my brief attempt at an American impersonation. I read it as "Baw-druhm" Americanly but "Bo-dr'm" Britishly, which is piss poor.)

Why so defensive of "Zanaseraborini"? Just get rid of that last I, and all is forgiven. :) (So that I don't have to read it as "Zanaseraborini!" in an Italian accent :) )

Just a curiosity: I wouldn't to talk about other mods so much here, but perhaps Kogo'Tel was named in this way to avoid 'name conflicts' and confusion (which is fine) with the Silgrad Tower mod? Both Kogo'Tel and the city layout (Redoran) sounds fine to me.

'Tel Silgrod' would only put back the confusion that 'Kogo'Tel' fixed, at least in my humble opinion.

Agree on changing the spelling of Bodrum. With my accent, it sounds like the sound of your knuckles on wood.

Sailen Vulgate is Beth, but it's not great. I could take it or leave it, really.
Seyda Vano I don't mind. I do wonder what Seyda means though. Check this out:
House Hlaalu, of which I am blood kin, of the Seventh Family, of direct descent from Hlaalu Brevur (May We Seek Forever the Seyda Neen), now has undisputed mastery of the other four Houses.
Ghormoth -> Blademoth?

Gah'ruhn -> Ayeruhn? (Using Othrensis for Roauf Duhr)
(I like the idea of naming Indoril stuff after Lexie)
However, this whole settlement needs serious redesign; it mixes arch and I'd recommend reconstituting the ints as two separate settlements built near one another.

Dondril & Dreynim are some of the better names, in my opinion.

I also recommend removing pretty much all the "Village", "View", etc suffices.

Dont ever assume you know how American's say something based off of something else. We have the wonderful fortune of every word being pronounced differently than the next :-P I pronounce it 'beau - drum' like a longbow, and a percussion drum. Bodrum. with a slight shortening of the u. Bodr'm almost.

And I think Tel Silgrod is the worst fucking name in the history if this project. Plus it's 1 letter away from Silgrad which is just bad. And if we're going to have Tel in the name it should be different from the other 100 Tel cities in place already. I like Kogo'Tel, and it's correct anyway.

It's like people in Mogadishu don't call it Mogadishu even though that's what it is on the map. Them? They call it The Mog, or just Mog. So whatever your argument for Kogo'Tel is, that's just how they say it.

I know it's Beth. But even Sailen Gate, or Vulsailen Gate, would be better (and they're still kinda crappish). I really don't see why a city would be called vulgate.

I like some of the names which have been objected to:
Kogotel (the name was changed because of ST and will not be changed back. Silgrod Pass stays though. And note the spelling.)
Bodrum (it's not bad, I wouldn't mind Bodrem though)
Seyda Vano (the occassional, but rare, reoccurrance of unknown name-parts from the original is not just acceptable, its cool)
Zanaseraborini (these names are supposed to be unpronouncable)
Ranyon-ruhn (I grew up with it and it's a fine name, especially with Tel Aranyon, highlighting the fact that after Tel there's an a added before an r [as in Tel Aruhn].)

Blacklight's name will be Baan Malur, which I spent a few hours perfecting with random word throwoutery. I anticipate a several page bitch from Gez about that.

Karthor Dale is now Kartuhr.

No. Muhrsin is crappy, just like Ouadaruhn.

You would probably read it something like carteur, though the first r should be the English r, not the Parisian r.

If I left it as Kartur, I would read it like Aaron Carter, which would be wrong.

No, not like Ouadaruhn. Ten thousand times more crappy than Ouadaruhn. If Ouadaruhn is a turd, Muhrsin is an overflowing cesspool built with bricks of dried dung. Muhrsin's crappiness does not go to eleven, it goes straight to the googolplex.

Personally I like every name on Map 1 and Map 2 (Darconis as well), they are splendid to me.
Need to think a bit about the names in the other maps, however the most of them doesn't sounds bad to me.
'Reich Parkeep' could reminds nazism to someone, but who cares about these people? Even ST uses it, and no one complained.
Hemitheon wrote:Zanaseraborini sounds like Italian food

I like this name, sounds daedric to me.

Every dedric/dwemer name seems to be unpronunceable or weird to english and american people, but that's just a matter of what's your native language (and probably the reason why you do not like it): that's because in the english language words aren't pronounced as they're spelled; you apply the english pronunciation to them, and think they're ugly and strange.

Simply pronounce these names as italians do then, as they're spelled.

Zah-nah-seh-rah-bo-ree-nee
Vee-veh-k (Vivec)
Lockk-en and not 'Low-keen' (Lokken)

- EDIT:

Map3

Enamor Dayn
I Just don't like that 'Enamor' much;
Gah Ruhn
Reminds 'Gah Ouadaruhn' a bit;
Maar Mora
Could remind 'Maar brunette' in italian, but I don't care at all about that;
Ouadagahr
I prefer 'Ouada-Gahridur'
Rouaf Duhr
I agree with Lud, 'Rouaf' isn't very good.

The reason I named that village Enamor Dayn was because it ment "Pride of Dawn" . That's because the village is nice and it's on the east coast. (thats where the sun comes up) Please take this meaning into account. Otherwise I agree with a lot of these names, Gah Ruhn, Rhouaf Duhr and Stanegau village being the worst offenders here.

Daedric ruins aren't.

You wouldn't need to change it much to make it more daedric-ruin-like: Zanaseraborilu, Zanaseraborimat, for example. Feel free to find something else if so you want. The -borini ending is just not very happy for such a place.

Why should you change the name Silgrad pass to Silgrod pass? Because Silgrad tower (mod) uses that name? But I think that silgrad tower is lore.
Bodrum is also turkish marine city. Some people may be confused about it.

BTw: maar mora reminds to much to a commercial when i say this name in Dutch. Maar means but in dutch and mora is company of some croquettes.

Yes.

Sources for Silgrad Tower:
 • Arena
 • On Morrowind, the Imperial Province (non-fiction from Morrowind, written by Erramanwe of Sunhold, real author unknown but I'd guess Tedders)
Sources for Silgrod Tower:
 • The Real Barenziah (fiction from Daggerfall, written by Plitinius Mero, real author known: Marilyn Wasserman)
 • It's not Silgrad
So as you can see, it's a toss-up.

not really. We aren't using "Silgrad" anywhere in our mod for the obvious reason that it's the name of another prominent mod.

Hap, if you're going to delegate, can you please not stealth delegate. To my knowledge, no conclusion has been reached yet re: Darconis.

Anyway, I'm resigned to the fact that the name will change (because I like Darconis less than I like not having a Gah Ouadaruhn post-release situation occur again), but it really, really shouldn't change to Draloris.

This is 'cos Draloris is crappy and flowy. Other Imperial names are hard sounds and syllables: Ebonheart, Caldera, Pelagiad.

Draloris only has d, because the r is softened by o and i. Such a corrupt, crappy city shouldn't have a flowy name. It should be more hard sounds etc.

Anyone comes up with a good enough suggestion and I'll implement it in the next file I upload.

This one's problem is that it's too pronouncable, and the "ini" sounds diminutive and silly, and not at all serious.

Firewatch?

Plus, Ebonheart is not an Imperial name. It's a Dunmer name translated into English. Like Blacklight, Mournhold and Tear.

And I think I like Bohd'ram less than Bodrum. There are too many apostrophes in fantasy names already. Ald'ruhn (it's Ald-ruhn in cells but Ald'ruhn in books and dialogue) is already one too many.

Firewatch?
Is made of real words (like Ebonheart), and so does not sound as Dunmer as Draloris.

Look, Draloris is really, really crap. Let's not do this.

According to the concept map, Bodrum should be called Omaynla, but that is a crappy name as well. Maybe if we combine the two; Bodrayn?

Draloris is what it says on the map. There's a whole thread on it in internal discussion or lore somewhere. And it's not stealth delegating if I do it in public for everyone to see like that.

Helnim Wall is what it says on the map. Hence Helnim Hall being the name of the manor nowadays.

Anyway, I meant 'stealth' because you were stating everybody 'already knew that Darconis had changed' as if it were a widely known fact, when last I remember the result of those threads was that we decided that Darconis would stay Darconis, but that the manor would become Helnim Hall.

I've also been using the name Darconis for quite a while without being corrected, so assumed my memory was not at fault. (Unless those discussions did come out to a conclusion I'm not remembering?)

Regardless, Draloris is both crap and not map-accurate.
