[FCG] Traditional Yoku & Ra'Gada Weapons

Post by Gez »

What are Yoku weapons, what are Ra'Gada weapons, you ask?
Sload wrote:Ra Gada would look rougher and cheaper than Yoku, as it was made by peasants out of necessity for their wars with Nedes and monsters. It would feature more earthy materials, and probably be bulkier.

Yoku would be delicate and finely crafted by the noble artisans, working with a tradition that stretches back to the Dawn in the noble land of Old Yokuda.

Two different styles from two different traditions. De facto, Crown and Forebear styles.
There you go. Try to incorporate some Yoku patterns (cf. Lutemoth's concept art thread) in Yoku/Crown weapons. Try to depict Ra'Gada/Forebear weapons as an evolution and a simplification of the same designs -- the same artistic sensibility, but not the same amount of sophistication.

Either way, we're far here from the crude weapons the dunedwellers have to improvise. Those weapons, even the forebear ones, are made with all the tools and materials needed. The difference between Yoku style and Ra'Gada style is that they have a different level of balance between elegance and practicality.

Before TRification of the lore to make it richer, you already had the same idea,by the way. Compare Cyrus' sword (hi-res scans in Noirgrim's showcase with Ra'Gada weapons (from the Origins of Cyrus). So it's not like we're pulling this entirely out of thin air.

Don't forget Lutemoth's concepts. They're brilliant, and I firmly believe we should follow his vision on weapons. It just needs to be officially sorted, named, and elaborated upon.

A precise list of weapon types is needed here too. Gez, add such a list first, please.
PoHa: how can we best this trio of trouble? who will save us from this menace of sub-par models? what will we do?
PoHa: I know! we'll shoot an Aro at them
Aro: you have only one Aro missile!
PoHa: yes, but its heat seeking and quite possibly indestructible

Weapon types? The Redguards' favoritism for one-handed blades is famous. So, mostly swords, especially for the Yoku ones.
This mean you should look at doing this type of weapons:
- scimitar
- jambiya
- rapier
- yatagan
- sabre
- cutlass
- small sword

Now in Oblivion we've got to give some love to blunt weapons as wells. Flanged maces and tabarzins for one-handed, poleaxes for two-handed. All these examples are European, try to imagine them more Redguardish.

Finally, a bow would be great. Play with the curves of the bow to make is as serpentine as possible.

Now, on to the Ra Gada weapons, that's basically the same thing, though you can cut down on the ornate one-handed swords and instead add larger weapons, and more blunts, including hammers and picks. A bow is unneeded for them I think.

We shall need something like
Yoku:
- 1 knife or dagger
- 2 one-handed swords
- 1 two-handed sword
- 1 one-handed mace
- 1 two-handed poleaxe
- 1 bow
Ra Gada:
- 1 dagger
- 2 one-handed sword
- 1 two-handed sword
- 1 one-handed hammer
- 1 one-handed axe
- 1 two-handed pick

Though they're armors, not weapons, its worth noting that Lutemoth considered this to be Ra Gada and this to be Yoku.

I figured all active FCGs would be stickied until closed. That's just how it used to be. It helped people know which ones were active, since people often post in inactive or old threads even after they are unstickied.

Let them post, if they can add something interesting. IMHO, you should only lock if things would get really out of our control or completely in a different way we want them to... I'm sure Gez knows what he is doing. Now cut out last 4 posts, if you want :P

Here's a little something:

A more detailed version later, along with some other stuff.

Edit: Another one.

I reckon it would be helpful to first round up all of Lutemoth's weapon concepts to see if they can be divided into certain categories and degrees of craftmanship and only then check if we need any additional concepts.

My suggestion:

Why did you put this for Ra Gada? I see many similaraties between this sketch and the rest of the yoku weapons. And this definitely isn't a simplification of design...

I don't know if this sketch is old, but it looks like one to me. It has elements of Dunedweller styles but it isn't clearly defined. I would ignore it, because Lute gave examples of far better developed design(propably later).

A simple poleaxe:

http://www.niceboots.org/~evergrey/Tamriel/poleaxew.jpg

Very quick and dirty, I know. If y'all like the concept, I can make it ornate- maybe even wrap a serpent body down the pole?
It's iron or steel or something and bronze.

I don't recall there being pole axes or spears in Oblivion, but i noticed it on the list. Are they meant to occupy the Staff slot?

Maybe they are the Hamerfellian answer to the 2-handed axe?

Beautiful concept, Evergrey. It would probably fit best as the Yoku weapon, so yes, the pole can be made more ornate. :)

The two-handed blunt slot. Even if they're not in vanilla Oblivion, they work well. A lot of mods have added them.

Hope you didn't mind me rotating your pic. :)

One of Lute's Stirk weapon concepts, right? It's not bad. Just by curiosity, can you try to get it in-game? (Even if the model is not perfect yet.)

I really like how you've blended your own style with some elements of Lutemoth's design. Great stuff Lighter. :) More importantly, you've presented two sets of weapons which are cohesive and consistent.

So are the Yoku weapons supposed to look middle eastern? Like scimitars and such? Unfortunately, I've only had the privilege of playing Morrowind and Oblivion, not the others. :(

As far as uniqueness of design goes, the only one you missed was Redguard. Both Arena and Daggerfall looked quite generic and the cultural identity of the various races was not yet really defined.
