hugon's showcase

Post by hugon »

hey there,

I'm a beginning moddeler, and for a long time I have admired TR and I though it was time to help you guys a bit. As I said I'm a starting moddeler, further I can do interiors and landscaping (No chance to show that of, it al in the NPc with Jobs mod, of which I'm a team-member). But I'm here mostly as a moddeler. I use 3ds-max

Here are some pictures of some buildings I made, the first two are Amsterdamstyle buldings (ÃÂ￾ live in amsterdam) , and the second is watchtower (which isn't very good, but it was my first moddel ever and I made it with Blender.)

I have added the nifs of the first two models to this post, for when somebody wants to review them. Notice that I never have had time to completly finish of the black building so its is still a bit messy.

Hope you like it,
Hugon

Welcome to TR, hugon!

I love the buildings (and not just because I'm Dutch myself).

Nice buildings, and I guess you already know the meaning of a showcase since you have uploaded files already. One flaw is that the bevel tool is not used. It makes a massive difference. Also, when making a large object like a house you do not need any bottom to the mesh, since nobody will see it. Either way, you are fairly close to TR levels already, at least in my opinion. Better modellers than me will see this thread and better explain what I am trying to say. ;)

Thanls for the nice reply's! I will try to use the bevel-tool more often Bamman, thanks for the tip. I know you can delete the bottom, but that is something I do in the very last peferctionstage, when I solve the errors and finish up the model, and the black building hasn't gone through that stage yet because the mod I made him for died, and didn't feel like finishing that model for nothing. So that building will still have quit some bugs, I'm sorry for that.

nice meshes :). I only have a few things you can improve. First of all there is a hole in the back of the round piece on top of the second building. Some of the objects also have all vertices doubled and seperated, that causes a problem since the smooth function won't work in that case. Smoothed meshes look way better in the oblivion engine so practically you should always apply the smooth function. And the upper window of the second building has many useless poly's. But that are all minor mistakes ;).

You don't have to post fixed meshes or anything, I would just like to see how that bridge LN suggested will turn out :)

That bridge looks like a nice challenge. I'm working on it, and will show my progress as soon as possible!

Can't wait to see it, buildings have not been my forte, but you are a great modeler and make it look easy. Can't wait to see that bridge. Oh, Aro, Jelle, and Lady N are those better modellers I mentioned. If you have a problem they would be your best option to go to. I would probably be a last resort.

I will try not get mixed up in the competition who is the best modeler ;) , the only thing I can say is that all the newly made meshes I saw from TR are stunning. So I will place my bet on the team effort (oh no, I sound like some giggling softy.)

Work on the bridge goes much better then I expected. And the whole progress has learnt me a lot. Here is the current state of the bridge: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m88/hugon96/bridge.jpg
Nevertheless I walked into some problems, and I hope one of you guys can help. The first problems is seams, I made only a quarter of the bridge and duplicated that quarter four times and put the bridge together. I did this to make the bridge symmetrical, but now you can some seams between the different parts when moving the camera in Max. Will this lead to problems or ugliness ingame? The other problem is a bit more practical, I just can't the decoration on the railing to be good looking (I mean this decoration: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m88/hugon96/railing.jpg ) Any tips on how I can make such a beautiful shape?
I'm sorry for the long post and all the questions.

Ooh, nice. I see you are a good modeler and I believe you will become one of the better modelers here. I know you can UV map and you know how to get it in the game, I know you can also model very well, and I know that others are confident about you too. I Recommend You For A Promotion (If I have the power to do that, Jelle told me I could if I wanted to.) But, before you get promoted try to texture the bridge, I wanna see it :P. Oh, try extruding the faces and scaling them down as you go, here is an example I made in like 10 seconds showing exactly what the results are. Try merging the vertices along the seams so its one continuous polyhedron, rather than several just sitting next to each other.

Unless you already did that anyway!

Try to make it out of seperate objects (the railing, the pilar, and the decorative three-dimensional "lines"), using the extrude tool. That should work. If you need more advice please try to be a bit more specific or show a render of what you have now.

I'll already give you my reccomondation for promotion. I'm sure you'll get along fine, just claim something you like and ask for advice if needed.(with me that's also possible in Dutch, if you're more comfortable with that) :)
