Anti-Virus
I was wondering what anti-virus program people here use.
I used to use Norton for years (back when my dad did all the computer stuff), but once I got my own was knew how, I switched it several times. Norton is both shit and slow.
Today I use AVG Free, which I like a lot. It's free for one, and offers good protection (haven't had anything slip through and I browse a lot) and it frequently gets better.

I have AVG Free 9.0 on my desktop (and I like it a lot) and McAfee on my laptop (which I still haven't tried, as my laptop has no internet connection yet).

You know what's also popular? Enormous flying cities and ridable dragons. Maybe TR should invest in navigable ships and underwater cities.

I use AVG as well. I've used Mcafee with good results but the price got to high to justify when AVG is free. I absolutely hate Norton because it didn't do so well years ago (which is why I switched to Mcafee) and I lost two hard drives to a nasty spinup virus (the drives literally spun until they smoked) and haven't used Norton since.

Really the only viruses (and I've had to work with some incredibly deadly ones) I've ever encountered or heard of come from porn, so just stay away from that and you'll be good.

That's like telling people if they live they might die, so they should just avoid the former.

Many years ago ('94 ) I worked as a repair tech at a small computer shop. Somehow or other we managed to have a virus called "stoned empire monkey b" infect our mainframe. By the time we found out we had a virus it had infected more than half of our floppies that we used to reinstall programs for our customers. Considering we had more than 11,000 floppies that we had to check and clean one by one, you can understand the frustration with Norton which we used for all our machines. It took the two of us more than three weeks to go through all of the floppies.
The virus itself was pretty nasty, not because of the damage it did (it encrypted a random sector on the hard drive every so often), but because it spread by just putting a disk in a drive. You didn't have to open anything or run anything, all you had to do was put the disk in and you were infected! Norton didn't spot the virus at all at first and when the update came out that could spot it, it still couldn't clean it. We found the virus because of a customers machine having Mcafee installed and it went off when we put in an infected disk from our collection. We switched to Mcafee that day!

Oh, and as far as programs goes, no one should be saying anything other than NOD32

i use Common Sense, 2009 edition i should probably invest in something more fool-proof...
[edit] come to think of it, i do think we have something installed. no idea what it is though, other than prompting to check for updates it doesn't seem to do anything.

If you want somethings thats really good and dont mind paying a little, get Trend Micro. has patches and updates like every 20minutes , No joke.
Otherwise AVG is probablly the way to go, that with Spybot (and Teatimer) is usually good for free.
If you want something powerful, Norton 360 is okay, but be aware its a resource whore and a complete an udder "something" to remove fully.

Yes, Trend Micro is good as well. In addition to AVG, I often run a free online scan with its HouseCall.RelinQ wrote:

I've been infected numeral times when I first started using a PC, although now it's all but common sense to me what a virus is. For instance if a porn video has a ".exe" at the end it's obviously not really a video. If I happen upon a fishy executable I send it to Virus Total which scans it with 40 of the most well known virus protection softwares, or anyways their virus datebases. I also use 127.0.0.1 host file to IP block many known infective and advertisive sites. Just to be sure I still reformat my PC every few months to be a bit more positive that nothing's amiss.

We used to have Norton too. Big mistake! You probably haven't heard of it but we use 'ESET Smart Security 4'. I haven't heard of it either but the dude in the computer shop recommended it and it works like a dream.

@home: I don't use virus scanners, as I only click that what is safe, and never open attachments, e-mail text based, and never surf to unsafe sites. Neither do I use programs like Limeware (or Napster when it existed). And I never get infected.

I use McAfee Internet Security, so it gives me Antivirus/ antispyware, a firewall, and instant messenger/e-mail protection. I also use Spyware Blaster as a backup means of blocking malware, Spybot S&D and Malware Bytes as "2nd opinion" scanners, Hijack This to manually detect threats, and CCleaner... to clean things .
