Status of the Project?

Post by Versipellis »

I remember a couple of years back, this site was updated all the time. I haven't seen a news update in a year or so... mind if I ask if this is dead or not, and if it's worth me chipping in and helping? I can mod and script, but I'm out of practice.
I'm not trying to be a necromancer, but I'm doing a bloody good job of it... :-(

Hi there, this project is far from dead. It is made by a group of people who like to do this in their free time. So people come and go. Since Skyrim came out a lot of modders are playing that more, but they seem to come back now again since morrowind is the best :).

And ofcourse there is a way you can help. Go over to the showcase forum read the sticky threads and make a showcase of your own.

Thanks. I remember the whole procedure, I just didn't see much point if the project wasn't really updating! I'll try and get a showcase together as soon as I have the chance.

the News forum isn't the only place to find out about progress. In fact, it's probably the place that's least updated, because it depends on major milestones. Check out the individual forums for exterior claims, interior claims, etc. and you'll have a better sense of what's going on.

Well, its now been more or less, exactly 3 years since any major updates. Would be nice to just tie up any loose ends that might be about and release whats there(the 99% of it). Its not like its going to be the end of the world.

We're working on it. Literally two more claims to go.

These map numbers are rather confusing. What we call Map 2 nowadays is bigger than what was released as map 2 some years ago; among other things, it contains Necrom (which is one of the two missing claims; the city has all its houses and buildings, but very few NPCs yet, since it is very hard to write reasonable dialogue and backstories for such a place). On the other hand, a couple of Map 3 quest claims are already finished (e. g., Sailen), so we will probably release them together with the Map 2 ones.

Some people don't get it, we do this for fun and need to work, maintain social life and do other stuff around this. Maybe join in and help?

I get it perfectly fine that everyone here is a volunteer and does this for fun.
To the point, I know that plenty enough has been done that it can warrent a release were loose unfinished ends to be tied up.
I reserve the right to be critical some. If you want to be critical of me, come over to the province cyrodiil site and criticize me on why I havent gotten more Ayleid meshes finished there.

I tend to not get involved with other mods. But good luck with your stuff over there. New map is released when all loose ends are finished up. So no date is set.

I don't think it is the case that the modders are simply neglecting the 'loose ends' or anything. I'm sure the modders here are as keen as anyone to present another release. It's just that these loose ends are still a lot of tedious work and it might have formed a bottleneck of sorts.

The slow progress might be as frustrating to modders as to fans, if not more. So annoyed responses to repeated questions about progress, though not totally excusable, are quite understandable.

Well, BC just laid out a plan for Necrom and claimed it. Thank god, jeebuz, that has been around for fucking ever, I hope you finish it BC.

Nemon edit for making sensification: ..'MERICAAAUUHH!!
In response to Nemon's post there: "Fuck yeah!".

So yeah, to OP, this project is definitely still in production, but most of the progress doesn't take place in a way obvious to most people.

Law of diminishing returns.

You can spend forever on the last 1%. It is unlikely that there will come a point when the development is regarded as entirely finished. I say this as an experienced software developer. There will always be more to do. I am arguing for an early slightly unfinished release. I believe that doing so will release energy and enthusiasm (and yes critisism). No doubt 3rd party mods will happen also, as they have with Nehrim.

no, there will not always be more to do. We haven't added anything new to our to-do list in probably 2 years. It is just the simple fact that we tried a horrendously stupid approach to NPC detailing for the SE release. We are rectifying this for future releases as to make claims more manageable. We would change it for SE, but we are so close to done that there is literally no way to make it go any faster at the moment. The remaining claims are held by people who are actively working on them, and the remaining work loads are as such that splitting the claims into smaller pieces would create more work than it would save.
