Dense Forest Woodland Idea

Post by sxotty »

Some landscapes should have more trees, so far there are no forests, there are only scattered trees. It does not in anyway seem realistic. If it is impossible because of framerate issues maybe someone should come up with a better idea of how to make a forest, such as a canopy of one polygon that has leaf textures strewn about, and then make lower density trees below it to make it less obvious.

Then the trunks could just be pillars sticking up into the canopy and that would be low polygon, but still make the ambient feel of a forest.

The number of shorter tress could be varied to whatever was required to make it feel like a forest (green lights could be added and the sun blocked out) The more obscured the limbs are from the player the lower number of polygons could be used to create a good forest feel.

Perhaps it would even be possilbe to have a layer of fog above the player to further obscure the view.

If these ideas do not work because of engine limitations sorry.

I think what would be a good idea is make three or four diff. meshes, each mesh has maybe 5 to 12 trees, and then for a pine forest, just use them a few times, rotating them here and there so you dont get a geometric looking forest, and have three or four meshes for each type of tree, as well. That way we'd have maybe 50-100 less statics and that would speed up the frame rate a bit.

Somone has done this I think...it was posted on ES some months ago, but I never saw it with my own eyes, and I don't even remember the name of it. Not very helpful eh?

Nevertheless, it's going to end up being a necessity as we move out of Morrowind and into truly forested areas in other countries.

well, try this. there are always little openings in forests, wether thatey are 1 foot or 100 feet, so try puting thoose in. also, puting in little paths that whpever made will make it better. and that huge nif mdel idea is really good. if you look, bethsada did that for saome areas of bloodmoon.

The reason there are no forests in Morrowind is because of its harsh climate. Notice how few trees on Vvardenfell have actual leaves; most are dead or dying. The ashy soil is unsuitable for growing more than a few trees here and there. And periodic ashfalls do nothing to help this along. Our first real forests should be in Skyrim and the very southernmost part of Morrowind, a pine forest and a rain forest respectively. I think Majra and Gimli the dwarf are working on the rainforest, and we'll start making Skyrim forests once we start making Skyrim. :D
