Messenger Service and newspapers

Post by STH »

Hello,

sometimes it is important to deliver messages from one city, house, etc to another.

in that case my idea is to have a faction, perhaps joinable for the player, who do the dirty postman's work.

they could offer their services to local kings or other high ranking persons and the service is very expensive. You break the law if you (or NPC's) are attacking the messenger or if some smugglers are kidnapping the messenger and try to decode a very important message. This faction could have some new quests for the player like: deliver this message to.. or find a kidnapped messenger, ...

another idea is to have a newspaper like the "common tongue" in tribunal expansion. The newspaper could be global or a local city newspaper.... you can use a newspaper to spread romours or the player could be keeped up with local events.

The text of the newspaper could be changed after you have done the main quest or after you reaced a higher rank in a house/guild, etc...
if in danger, if in doubt,

Nothing can stop the mail-men! Not rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor giant radioactive zombie alits! (Although I doubt a giant radioactive zombie alit would be that hard to defeat)

Although every once in awhile important times would have messages distributed like the common tongue. So possible for a quest or two but not widespread. As for cuiriers yeah they would probably be around especially in towns with dignitaries.

Alot of times nobles have their servants deliever messages for them it work well with faction quests were you have the PC deliever messages back and forth.

Also I think that it would be nice to have certain quests were the PC will recieve such messages, if they enter a tavern or inn, they might be approached by a messanger who hands him a letter and asks for a response, of course it would be special quests but it would add a more personal feeling because you are getting a message from someone I think.

And if you wanted quick money, you could do a newspaper route! That would be cool.

I think this is cool you could start off delivering mail to all residents of a town the take an important package to a noble then deliver a letter to a great house the do long distance deliveries

It doesn't make sense for there to be a faction to be totally devouted to mail delivering, as no one would trust them with their mail, it just wouldn't work.

Yeah actually it could work. I.e. part of the code would be to not read mail, and to not interfere with what is going on regardless and so forth. Then somehow the player would have to choose between his postman ethics and a higher morality  SOrry but its funny.

This faction, would only work in the Imperial City IMO. No Dunmer would trust their message with smoeone else, and most factions wouldn't either. Typically you give it to a lower ranking member of your faction(delivery missions for example). This would probably only work there because of the large amounts of commoners that are not part of any faction, but the service would need to be very cheap, and still larger factions and Nobles wouldn't use it.

I don't know if it was backed by a great house, so seperate mail for each house.

People would trust it
