Im 3ds max retarded... among other retardednesses

 ive gotta problem. My great plan of attack on my first overly complicated model was to make a spline line of my outline. I would do this by the keyboard entry. I had drawn the concept on a grid and got the cordinates i needed. Then I would use the extrude modifer to make my model have some width. Well, when my line is done, and i go to extrude, all that happens is my line gets extruded, but the side planes are still clear. only the perimeter of the line is solid color. its like a paper cutout or a cookie cutter kinda thing. why did this happen?

It sounds like you need to add lines between the two 'cut-outs' to connect the vertices. You are probably in the state of having 2 attached planes.

Instead of using splines (which have to be converted to mesh before they will accept texture maps IME) you should just build from shapes. Once converted to mesh, they can be manipulated to become anything you need, and they are pretty easy to skin.
