Description:
I accepted to help Nalenteris Brendu in his quest and found the Ogrim, so far so good.
The creature was peaceful (wasn't attacking on sight) and I could not find a way to let Nalenteris attack it without hitting it first myself, as this would angry the Ogrim and start the fight.
I ended up manually updating the journal to succeed, I got my little reward but the guy wouldn't stop following. We then payed a visit to his father and as expected he thanked me for assisting his son and gave me a discount.
Long story short, I got myself a companion. We traveled together for a while, then a combination of Port Telvannis walkways and poor pathfinding killed him.
Now his father hates me!

It looks like you need to be close enough to the NPC (1000 game units) so that he can force dialogue with you and then attack the ogrim, was that the case?
Another thing is that the script relies on the "GetLOS" function (get line of sight), which might not behave the same in OpenMW. Can someone else test this?

What I did was changing the scripts so that Brendu's AI no longer switches to AIWander once he sees the ogrim, but only does so after the fight. Thus, even if he is too far away to properly initiate combat, he'll still follow the player until the fight can begin.
