Ever since I first heard about them and the cult that surrounds them I wanted to see them ingame. I really like their name and having some non-hostile moths flying around in the Nibenay border region sounds like a nice addition to me. The lore doesn't mention that they are exclusive to Nibenay (and insects don't really give a damn about crossing borders).

There's a pretty rad moth model with good animations in the ancient (from 2003 I think) Morrowind Additions mod, it only has a terribly unrealistically colored texture and stupid sounding sounds which I could both fix up.

Let me know if that's something we might want to add.

This is what it looks like without any changes:

I imagine Province Cyrodiil will eventually make their own Ancestor Moth creature. If we were to add them to Morrowind, we'd use the Province Cyrodiil model. The one from 2003 you linked looks rather poorly designed and bland to me.

I'm rather leery on adding ancestor moths to Morrowind, precisely because they are such an iconic piece of the Cyrodiil look and culture. Same reason why we don't put giant bugs and mushroom-trees in non-Morrowind provinces: they're such a big part of the province's identity that it would be odd to find them elsewhere.

Lorewise, the ancestor moths would stick to the dense jungles of the Nibenay due to biological neccesity (their favored ecosystem) and as a matter of mythical significance: the moths embody the souls of Cyrod's dead, so it would actually be odd for them to cross the ancient borders defined by the Emperors of old. Either way, there's also a mountain range in the way.

Morrowind is supposed to have its own indigenous species of moth, the Velothi Blight Moth, which is more hardy and adapted to the eastern climate. Perhaps you could feature this critter in the west? Moth swarms could also feature in Imperial Cult shrines, though it would be an expensive and controversial matter to keep them well-fed. I also suspect the Dunmer would interpret this as necromancy, with predictable results.

Anyway, check out Lady Nerevar's On Silk for more moths and moth-related shenanigans
