Tales and Beliefs of the Deshaan
by Acolyte Methaso Droras

Foreword
As commanded by Diviner Saryn Indoril, I have traveled the Deshaan these past few years and compiled a collection of their myths, beliefs, and religious practices, many of which contradict Temple orthodoxy.  Should the Temple act upon this “Southern Anomaly” in the future, our efforts would be aided by understanding the preexisting practices which would have to be corrected.  These stories are copied down verbatim, as told to me by a kindly (by Dres standards) priest in the city of Tear.

And at that time our ancestors, the Saltwalkers, herded their beasts and charted their movements by the firmament.  Our people kept the True Way, as all Dunmer did, and worshipped the Three Good Daedra, as is their due.

Loved were we by Daedra, for we demonstrated each day our strength and cunning merely by existing.  At that time the salt was a test of our will and piety.  It offered no sustenance, no life-giving food.

Long did we exist in such a state.  We survived on skyrender honey and meat from our beasts.  We walked the corrosive salt and avoided the Deshaan’s deadly predators.  Some fled, betraying the weakness of their will and soul.  We knew providence would come, that the Three would one day transform our land and raise us up.

Darkened was our skin, and our eyes became like flame. A blessing from Azura, praise be to the Three!  The Lady of Dawn and Dusk had seen fit to change our form, a sign that we, the Changed Folk, had triumphed over the blasphemous Dwemer.  A gift from the heavens, a permanent reminder that we are the Daedra’s most loyal servants.

A greater gift came with the ascendency of ALMSIVI, Realizations of the Three.  Providence at last!
Sotha Sil, Lord of Mysteries and Master of Enigmas, came to the Saltwalkers and spoke.  “This land which is yours lies barren, desolate.  In reward for your many years of struggle, I shall show you all how to make this land bloom.  Feed your brothers and sisters in the rest of Resdayn.  Master your land and embrace a new life.”

Sotha Sil, The Great Knower, pulled saltrice seeds out of his pocket and showed the gathered Saltwalkers the secrets of cultivating the plant.  Through His magic, the plant grow strong in mere moments, and Sotha Sil said “here is My gift to you, freely given out of the Love which the Three and Three bear for you.”  All the gathered Saltwalkers took seeds from these holy plants, and used them to father their own crops.

The salt, which had once been the great test of our people, became the source of our prosperity.
And so it came to be that the  Saltwalkers walked no more.

{More may be added, or it could simply be kept as a short story}

[Orignially I wrote this to be used as a book read during the course of my House Dres questline, but I figured that, as literature, it should be posted here separately.]
