Tumtum Tree (Fungi Tree)

Earlier released to TR but not in it’s own thread. I don’t really know the status on this one so make this a new start for it.

Also when the cups are reversed it kinda looks nice too.

The textures do look rather stretched in places, which is unfortunate. I’m not actually sure where these could work; there are several options, Telvannis being the most obvious but not necessarily best.

I like these, but would like them more if the trunk wasn’t a straight line and also if the cup interiors merged better (texture-wise) with the stalks.

What about the Velothi mountains as a partial replacement for pine trees? They have the same sort of silhouette.

Does: concepts, textures, youtube vids, admin stuff e.g. PR, handbook, assets, small website things. Activity level: wildly unpredictable. Still active. Find me on Discord.

Yeah, that’s a possibility. In the really cold areas I think trees should tend to have some kind of ‘fur’ or needles, but for lower/warmer areas I think this model could work quite well, with a few minor modifications. That said, the trunk isn’t completely straight be the looks of it. I do agree the cups could be merged with the stalks better, though.

Nice texture fix. How’s the poly count on these, would they be able to handle some more polys on the trunk?

They can take some bends in the trunk without too much trouble. If that is what you had in mind?

I was thinking either some bends or some thickness variations; right now it looks like a kebab.

I think I personally like the relatively straight trunk of the tree, but it does look as though it’s just a simple cone at the moment. Perhaps the problem is not so much the straightness of it but how gradually it tapers. I would try adding more polygons along the trunk and making it look a little more uneven while still maintaining an overall straight profile. A liberal application of vertex shading would also add complexity to the trunk and give it more texture.

Edit: I do think the relative lack of vertex shading on the trunk is probably the biggest problem, actually. It makes the trunk look a bit flat, almost like an afterthought.

I thought these were being made for the grey meadows when I saw them lol. No one else got that vibe?

Ah, that’s true, though I think the Grey Meadow is probably fine in its current state and doesn’t really need more flora. I could really see this tree appearing around the edges of Grey Meadows, though.

I like 10Kaziem’s idea.  This would work well as a pine tree replacement around the Cormar and Baan Malur area.
